The story
KAIRO is a Houston-based rapper, producer, and songwriter whose work threads literary specificity through the Third Coast tradition. His sophomore album FLOWERSHOP (Petal & Concrete, 2025) debuted at #4 on Apple Music's Hip-Hop chart and earned a 7.8 from Pitchfork, who called it "the rare Southern rap record that gets quieter the closer you listen."
Born in Third Ward and raised between Houston and Beaumont, KAIRO began producing in high school and self-released his first project, EVERY EXIT, in 2024. The album drew early co-signs from Saba and Boldy James and led to placements on Complex's "Best Rap of 2024" and FADER's recurring rotation. He played his first headlining tour that fall — 22 dates, mostly 400-cap rooms, sold out by week two.
FLOWERSHOP marks an expansion. Recorded over fourteen months between Houston and Chicago, with production from Monte Booker, Mike Hector, and KAIRO himself, the album moves between sample-driven boom-bap and live-band soul without ever feeling like a genre exercise. Lead single Bluebonnet (1995) crossed 24M Spotify streams within three months and has soundtracked features at Pigeons & Planes, COLORS, and HotNewHipHop.
KAIRO tours behind the record through fall 2026, headlining venues from Bowery Ballroom to The Fillmore, with festival appearances at Day N Vegas, Pitchfork Music Festival, and Afropunk Brooklyn. He performs with a four-piece live band, a configuration he has maintained since his first headlining run. He remains independent.
In print
The rare Southern rap record that gets quieter the closer you listen. KAIRO has the patience of a writer twice his age.
FLOWERSHOP is the album everyone in Houston has been waiting for someone to make. KAIRO made it without asking.
A literary, lived-in record from one of the most assured young voices in American rap. Patient, beautiful, deeply Texan.
If you only listen to one rap album from 2025, make it this one. KAIRO is the future and he doesn't even know it yet.
